The Company has also consistently strived to enhance the Indian tobacco farmer's capability to improve the quality and productivity of his crop. It takes its learning from the lab to apply them in the field and also takes problems back from the field to the lab to develop appropriate solutions.
ITC has adopted model villages to demonstrate scientific farming techniques and their comprehensive advantages to the farmers.
ITC's extension services provide the vital link between farmers and scientists, and also between buyers of cigarette tobacco and the Company's sales team. ITC works closely with government agencies to help farmers develop new varieties of cigarette tobaccos, both flavourful and semi-flavourful. ITC also helps farmers develop new areas for cultivating tobacco.
ITC's Green Leaf Processing (GLP) plants at Anaparti and Chirala in Andhra Pradesh - the tobacco belt of India - are among the best in the world. Supported by state-of-the-art production process and quality controls, ITC processes and delivers over 120 million kgs of high quality tobaccos every year. The plants have in-house storage facilities, benchmarked to international standards, to guarantee hygiene and infestation control.
